Over 50 Dead in Jordan Hotel Blasts
By Jamal HalabyAMMAN, Jordan -- Al-Qaida issued an Internet claim of responsibility Thursday for three suicide bomb attacks on Western hotels that killed at least 56 people, linking the deadly blasts to the war in Iraq and calling Amman the "backyard garden" for U.S. operations.
In the attacks, the suicide bombers detonated explosives at the Grand Hyatt, Radisson SAS and Days Inn hotels just before 9 p.m. local time. One of the explosions took place inside a hall where 300 guests were celebrating a wedding.
Police on Thursday continued a broad security lockdown and authorities sent DNA samples for testing to identify the attackers. Land borders were reopened after being closed for nearly 12 hours.
The nearly simultaneous attacks late Wednesday wounded more than 115 people, police said. They detained several people overnight, although it was unclear if those being held were suspects or witnesses.
Government spokesman Bassel Tarawneh expected the death toll "to rise, as some of the injured -- at least two -- are in serious condition in the hospital." He said the victims included 33 Jordanians, six Iraqis, two Bahrainis, two Chinese, one American, one Indonesian, one Saudi and 13 whose identification had not yet been determined.
A Palestinian official in Jordan reported two top security officials died in the blast. Also, an Israeli newspaper listed an Israeli Arab among the dead.
Until late Wednesday, Amman -- a hilly city of white stone villas and glitzy high-rises -- had mostly avoided large-scale attacks and was a welcome sanctuary of stability in a troubled region.
The al-Qaida claim of responsibility, posted on a militant web site, said Jordan became a target because it was "a backyard garden for the enemies of the religion, Jews and crusaders, ... a filthy place for the traitors ... and a center for prostitution." It could not be independently verified. The claim, signed in the name of the spokesman for al-Qaida in Iraq, said the attacks put the United States on notice that the "backyard camp for the crusader army is now in the range of fire of the holy warriors."
Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muasher had said shortly after the blasts that al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was a "prime suspetc." The Jordanian-born al-Zarqawi is known for his animosity to the country's Hashemite monarchy.
Iraqi government spokesman Laith Kubba said the attack should alert Jordan that it needed to stop playing host to former members of Saddam Hussein's regime.
n Russia on Thursday condemned the attacks in Jordan, saying they were aimed to destabilize the Middle East and underscored the need for close international cooperation against terrorism.
In a condolence telegram to Jordan's King Abdullah II, President Vladimir Putin said the attacks were "yet another harsh confirmation" of the need to "mobilize the world community in an uncompromising struggle with this evil, which belongs to no nation or religion."

Triple hotel blasts kill 57 in Jordan
November 10, 2005
FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES
AMMAN, Jordan -- Bombers carried out nearly simultaneous attacks on three
hotels Wednesday night, leaving scores of casualties.
Casualty counts varied, but Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muasher reported
57 killed and 115 wounded in the three attacks -- at least two of them
suicide bombings. And suspicions quickly turned to Al Qaeda.
The explosions hit just before 9 p.m. at the lobby of the Grand Hyatt, in
a ballroom at the Radisson SAS and outside a nightclub at the Days Inn. At
the Radisson, 300 wedding guests were celebrating, including Jordanian
notables. A man strapped with explosives had infiltrated the crowd.
"We thought it was fireworks for the wedding, but I saw people falling to
the ground," said one wedding guest. "It was ugly."
The dead and injured were rushed from the hotels by ambulance workers and
hotel staff on gurneys and handcars usually used for baggage. Three
Chinese nationals were among those killed, the Foreign Ministry in Beijing
said today.
Security forces fanned out across the city after the attacks. Units in
armored vehicles sealed off streets around diplomatic missions, government
offices and hotels.
Police said highways leading to the city were shut. Cars were searched at
roadblocks in town. Jordan's secret intelligence police also was out in
force.
Muasher said there was no claim of responsibility but that Abu Musab al-
Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, was a prime
suspetc.
Last year, a Jordanian military court sentenced al-Zarqawi to death for a
role in killing a U.S. diplomat two years earlier. The United States has
offered a $25-million reward for any help in apprehending al-Zarqawi
because of his terrorist activities in Iraq.
He also has made an audiotape, which appeared on Islamic Web sites,
claiming credit for several failed bomb attempts in Jordan and stating his
interest in attacking Jordan.
Amman has become a base for Westerners who fly in and out of neighboring
Iraq for work. Hundreds of United Nations staff members for agencies such
as the World Food Program and UN Children's Fund work there.
The city's luxury hotels downtown often are full of U.S. and British
officials and contractors. The hotels also have become a gathering spot
for affluent Iraqis who have fled their country's violence.
Coincidence or not, the date of Wednesday's attack, Nov. 9, would be
written as 9/11 in the Mideast, with the day before the month.
Jordanians were sending mobile messages that read: "Have you noticed that
today is 9-11, similar to America's 11-9?"
